In Rome the adventure continues in Vatican City, one of the largest museum complexes in the world. The Vatican is the smallest nation in the world, with only about 550 inhabitants.
Given the influx of tourists, our visit started quite early, so we decide to take the subway. However, in the early morning the station was so packed with people that we couldn’t even enter the train. Only at the third try we finally were able to get in.
After a “cosy” trip, we arrived at our destiny. With the Rome Card, it wasn’t needed to stay on the line to get a ticket and we enter directly in the museum.
At the Vatican Museum, there are many places with such beauty and full of history. The ones that we liked more were:
- Cappella Sistina
- Stanze di Raffaello
- Cappella Niccolina
- Basilica di San Pietro
- Piazza San Pietro
Vatican gardens are a beautiful place to take a pause in your tour, due to the amount of green spaces and fountains. So we decided to stopped at the garden coffee shop, before we continue our visit.
Previous to visit St. Peter’s Basilica, we climbed to the dome. To get to the top of the dome we used an elevator, but we still had to walk 320 narrow steps, if we didn’t used the elevator the total of steps would be 551. The view above the city it is amazing and is totally worth the climb.
Piazza San Pietro
During the rest of the day, we walk by the river Tiber.
The golden hour in Vatican City
At the end of the day we get to Piazza Navona. This plaza it is full of life, light, children playing, tourists… It is a unique place, with an Egyptian obelisk in the centre of the square combined with a large fountain. This fountain – Fontana dei Quatro Fiumi – represent the 4 main rivers that were knew in the past: Danube, Nile, Ganges and River Plate.
